Gold rush: International awards for MPavilion 2018!
MPavilion 2018 by Barcelona-based architect Carme Pinós of Estudio Carme Pinós drew international attention and a lot of local love when it arrived in the Queen Victoria Gardens last season. So we’re thrilled to share the news that Carme’s MPavilion has won Gold at Australia’s prestigious Good Design Awards, and has been shortlisted at the international World Architecture Festival Awards and at the Victorian Architecture Awards!
Winners of the 61st annual Australian Good Design Awards were announced at a ceremony on 11 July 2019, with MPavilion 2018 picking up a Gold trophy in the Architectural Urban category. The Good Design Awards celebrate the best new products and services on the Australian market and reward emerging areas of design including business model innovation, social impact and sustainability.
The World Architecture Festival Awards, to be announced in Amsterdam in December, has shortlisted MPavilion 2018 in the categories of ‘Completed Buildings—Culture’ and ‘Small Projects’. The awards feature shortlisted projects from over seventy countries, with MPavilion sitting alongside entries including the Tibetan Intangible Cultural Heritage Museum by Shenzhen HuaHui Design, the Royal Academy of Music Theatre in London by Ian Ritchie Architects, and the Amos Rex art museum in Helsinki by JKMM Architects.
MPavilion 2018 was also shortlisted in the 2019 Victorian Architecture Awards, achieving a place in the category of ‘Sustainable Architecture’. The Australian Institute of Architects (AIA) Awards program offers an opportunity for public and peer recognition of the innovative work of Victorian architects, with MPavilion 2018 recognised for the collaboration between Estudio Carme Pinós and ZILKA Studio, which assisted with the commission.
Speaking about the shortlisted entries, Amy Muir, Victorian chapter president, said, “The design outcomes achieved via the shortlisted public architecture projects define the important role that the public realm plays in providing exemplar-built outcomes that support our growing communities and provide a legacy for future generations.”
MPavilion 2018 has been gifted by the Naomi Milgrom Foundation to the people of Victoria and will be relocated to a new permanent home to be enjoyed by the community in perpetuity. MPavilion 2019 by Glenn Murcutt AO will open in the Queen Victoria Gardens on 14 November 2019 for a season of free events.
