Be part of the development of new Australian plays at Melbourne Theatre Company. MTC is thrilled to partner with MPavilion to showcase the incredible talent and vitality of ideas generated through the NEXT STAGE Writers’ Program. These readings and conversations will introduce Melbourne audiences to three new works commissioned through the program, all followed by an audience Q&A.

NEXT STAGE is MTC’s commissioning and development program and currently boasts 25 writers under commission or in residence. These include some of Australia’s most loved writers, as well as brilliant early career playwrights. Four NEXT STAGE plays feature in MTC’s 2020 season including Benjamin Law’s Torch the Place, which was read at MPavilion in 2018.

Thursday 19 December, 6.15–8pm: Play reading of Being Better by Chris Summers

Leo and Samira meet speed-dating and they struggle to overcome bad habits, baggage and the bell. It’s awkward, but everyone’s got issues—right? Luckily everyone is also looking for love, and doesn’t love cure all? Being Better is a romantic comedy for the 21st century—it’s fast, fractious and funny, but it also tells the truth.

Monday 20 January, 6.15–8pm: Andrea James in conversation with Jenni Medway about Sunshine Super Girl

Join us to hear writer/director Andrea James in conversation with MTC Literary Associate Jenni Medway about her new play, Sunshine Super Girl, which features as part of MTC’s 2020 season. Sunshine Super Girl is the remarkable story of Australian sporting legend, Evonne Goolagong, a girl from the bush who rose to become the no. 1 tennis player in the world and a household name by the age of 19.

Sybil, a world-leading research scientist discovers that her board Chair has deliberately farmed her theoretical work out to be clinically trialled in China. Worse, they’ve used Sybil’s genetic material to create a baby in a laboratory. The child, Pandora, is now five. In a race for the perfect human, manipulating the genome has had unexpected consequences.

Join us to hear this exciting new work and for a Q&A with the playwright and MTC Associate Director, Petra Kalive.
