Welcome to MPavilion 2019! This season’s lantern-inspired MPavilion was designed by Australia’s most famous architect, Glenn Murcutt AO, and we need you to help us open it in spectacular fashion!
For this season’s opening weekend, we invite you to a celebration of Australian design and identity, with performances, talks, workshops and more—and as with all events at MPavilion, it’s all absolutely free. See our opening weekend program below and we’ll see you in the Queen Victoria Gardens!
Opening Weekend Program
Thursday 14 November
MPavilion 2019 Opening Night, 6.30–9pm
We officially unveil MPavilion 2019 by Glenn Murcutt AO with a night of festivities, and you’re invited! With a Welcome to Country song composed and performed by renowned soprano, composer and Yorta Yorta woman Deborah Cheetham AO, this will be one to remember.
MMEETS—RMIT Master of Fashion (Design) Graduate Showcase, 6.30–9pm
A visually stunning celebration of the next crop of fashion designers recently graduated from RMIT University’s School of Fashion and Textiles Master of Fashion (Design) program.
The showcase will be followed by Sara Savage playing tunes into the night.
Friday 15 November
MMUSIC—Melbourne Music Week presents ‘Sound Bath’, 8–8.45am
Close your eyes and open your ears as we journey into sound and the senses with gong practitioner Mona Ruijs and Rory Pike (Rings Around Saturn).
MTALKS—How Smart Data is Shaping Our Identities, 10am–1pm
Swinburne University of Technology’s Smart Cities Research Institute explores the future of data use in our urban environments with this panel event.
MMUSIC—Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Lunchtime Quartet, 2–3pm
Enjoy a special quartet performance by members of the MSO.
MMEETS—Assemble Papers #12 Launch Party, 6–9pm
The Assemble Papers team takes over MPavilion to launch its Future Legacies edition with good tunes and a design-minded crowd.
Saturday 16 November
MMEETS—First Date with MPavilion 2019, 10–11.30am
Come meet our Cupid Crew and learn about the new MPavilion, designed by Australia’s most famous architect, Glenn Murcutt AO. You’ll fall in love at first sight.
MMUSIC—Deborah Cheetham AO & Dhungala Children’s Choir perform ‘Choral Connection Song Book’, 2–4pm
The Dhungala Children’s Choir—led by Deborah in conductor’s role—will show why they are the peak choral performance group for Indigenous children in Victoria.
MTALKS—Glenn Murcutt AO and Naomi Milgrom AO in Conversation with Peter Maddison, 3.30–4.30pm
Join Glenn Murcutt AO in conversation with Naomi Milgrom AO—founder of the Naomi Milgrom Foundation, which commissions each year’s MPavilion—as they discuss Glenn’s design for the 2019 edition of MPavilion, his illustrious fifty-year practice, and his most recent and forthcoming projects with architect and Grand Designs Australia host Peter Maddison.
MMUSIC—Hope St Radio with Danny Hotep, 5–8pm

MMEETS—Dog Walking Adventures in the City with Tom + Captain, 10am–12pm
Bring your hound and join the Tom + Captain Dog Walking Adventure team for a dog-filled meander through the city laneways, arcades and streets.

Enjoy a panel from Arts Centre Melbourne discussing the Arts Centre’s storytelling forecourt project, A Mile in My Shoes.
MTALKS—Eden Project presents ‘The Future of Mine Sites’, 12.30–1.30pm
